Created by the Texas Legislature and approved by a statewide vote in 2007, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) leads the Lone Star State’s fight against cancer. In 2019, Texans again voted overwhelmingly to support CPRIT with an additional $3 billion, for a total investment of $6 billion in cancer research and prevention. CPRIT is now a 20-year initiative – the largest state cancer research investment in the history of the United States and the second largest cancer research and prevention program in the world.
To date, the agency has awarded more than $3.7 billion in grants to Texas research institutions and organizations through its academic research, prevention, and product development research programs. CPRIT has also recruited 324 distinguished researchers to Texas, enabled the establishment, expansion, or relocation of 74 companies to Texas, and supported the delivery 10.1 million prevention services reaching all 254 counties in Texas. Committed to the fight against cancer, CPRIT focuses on expediting the innovation and translation of cancer research – in turn increasing the potential for a medical or scientific breakthrough – and enhancing access to evidence-based prevention programs and services.
Since 1998, the CDC’s NCCCP has provided assistance to identify how states address the burden of cancer in their geographic area. The Texas Legislature charged CPRIT with the responsibility of facilitating the development of the Texas Cancer Plan. The development involved a working group of public health experts, the Cancer Alliance of Texas (CAT), and numerous stakeholders. This report reflects changes, progress, and advances in cancer prevention and control efforts since 2018. In accordance with its statewide reach, the 2024 Texas Cancer Plan incorporates the input and feedback from stakeholders and community members across Texas.
